spacerHere at Compton Customs we primarily use two different types of finishes. On our food safe products we use a Mineral Oil finish. This is a finish that does require some up keep, just refresh with a clean rag soaked in mineral oil about once a month, but we feel the minor inconvenience is worth the safety of our customers. There are a couple reasons that we use this on our kitchen items. Most importantly it is completely food safe, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic. No other finish can claim all three of these traits. Also Mineral Oil does not create a solid hard finish which allows the oil to completely absorb into the wood protecting it from the inside out.
spacerOur non kitchen items and furniture has a completely different finish. We start with a hand rubbed oil finish which brings out the chatoyance of the wood. Then we move to a thin binder coat of sprayed on de-waxed shellac. Next we spray on a three coats of a highly durable water based polyacrylic. The final result is a clear durable finish that truly allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine as the star of the piece.
spacerHere at Compton Customs we really feel good about the results that these finishes give us. On our original designs, these are the only types of finishes we use. Occasionally when we get requests to replicate family heirlooms that have been lost or damaged, we will use other techniques that best suit each individual project. All of our customers receive a care and cleaning sheet specific to the item they purchase.
